Unbelieveable Luck

Went out at 6:30 this morning to pollinate the 282 Scherber pumpkin plant and the following is what I saw.  All of the flower petals were gone including the mesh bag covering the petals.  I believe the young dog at my neighbors house must have ate it off.  Next female is about 7 days away.  I can't believe the bad luck I've been having with this plant.

I witnessed a raccoon eat one of my females. That is bad luck for sure dogs usually don't show interest in plants!

I'd get worried that once that coon starts seeing the plant as a food source that he will be back for more. Often I find that most animals, after the pumpkin gets to basketball size ignore the pumpkin. The dog thing is new to me. My trouble maker dog is my neighbors full grown pup, so I knew, even before I planted my plants, that he could be trouble.

I've had awful luck with knitters this year. First a family of skunks stripped my tomato plants of green fruit. Then a coon ate one of my pumpkins. Then the skunks came back and ate more tomatoes and a pumpkin. Ugh. One skunk paid the price when I threw a rock in anger and connected. But there are dozens more I'm fending off. Next year I'm fencing in my garden.
